Technology

Greg Taylor started Step One in 2017 and decided to change the underwear game forever.

Before Step One hit the market, most underwear were made of 3 pieces of flat cotton, sewn together and that’s how underwear has been since the 70’s.

There was no innovation, problem-solving, or thought about how to use technology to make a garment you spend over half your life in better than what was available.

So Greg asked around and the consensus was the same, men suffered from 3 main problems when it came to underwear:
  • Chafing & underwear riding up into your crotch.
  • Continual readjustment of yourself in public.
  • Sweat and Sweaty B@lls

So Greg looked at each problem and created a solution he had not seen anywhere in the market.

  • Chafing & underwear riding up into your crotch.
  • Continual readjustment of yourself in public.

Chafing

Most underwear is made from cotton and between the legs is just more cotton. Cotton can trap sweat, especially between the legs and the nether regions.

So Greg, who loves hiking thought about when he hikes, he wears bike shorts, it stops chafing, but it doesn’t breathe well and traps sweat. When he’d take them off, he was covered in sweat.

So he thought about it, and then it came to him, ‘You just need the bike short material between the legs’ So he raced back to his hotel, took the one pair of bike shorts he had with him and went back to the factory and asked them to cut them up, and sew them as panels between the legs, only where you chafe.

He got some very strange looks; however, he pulled them out, walked around, and said, ‘WOW’. He knew he’d completely fixed the problem instantly.

Readjustment

Every guy is different in size down there. Greg thought about making underwear with different size pouches, he knew the small size would not sell well.

He then thought about making it move, he tried various ways, including a piece of string that you’d pull at the top which was meant to lift and support, however, tightening it too much was not something Greg wanted to live with!

Then he thought, it needs to stretch…. Elastic is the obvious solution, then he thought about the shape of a bra and how it fully cups and supports the breast, he then took this idea and asked the factory to sew a hidden piece of elastic around the pouch, enough to support, but also enough so stretch for even the largest guy! When he pulled it on, he felt the lift, the cup, the support and knew exactly that he’d solved it.

Sweat & Sweaty B@lls

All Greg ever knew was cotton, he had no idea that there were options when it came to underwear. He’d once been told about Bamboo bed sheets and as a hot sleeper, he had previously tried them. He looked at a bunch of fabrics, modal and synthetic, to name a few. He tried synthetics and they just didn’t breathe, they had other benefits, but the sweat just got trapped.
